Attachment and Culture: Deep Roots, Courageous Conversations and Self-Reflections

Presented by: Dr. Feion Villodas; Dr. Paul Guillory, certified EFT therapist, trainer and supervisor; and Zemed Berhe, certified EFT therapist and supervisor

Join the Northern California Community for EFT in this powerful and important workshop. The Black Lives Matter movement, and the murder of George Floyd highlighted the multidimensional nature of inequities of African Americans lived experiences. Within our mental health clinical communities there are also profound training inequities associated with African American clients. These deficits parallels both historical and current systematic racism in the USA that impacts therapists, researchers, and African American clients. This has created a critical need to promote effective clinical needs to integrate cultural factors into psychotherapy, and in particular EFT. All too often the focus with culture-related mental health trainings have offered a low bar of clinical trainings: that is, long on historical information, general clinical concepts in relationship to racial-context, or therapist processing their own implicit bias; but very short on clinical demonstrations, and multi-level clinical conversations about race-matters.

This workshop aims to advance EFT training with African American clients with a high bar of clinical excellence, consistent with EFT’s stance on trainings. We have a goal to move beyond just introducing history and race-based concepts to experiential learning and clinical practice. In particular, we want to create a safe place to learn, to courageously engage colleagues, and for all to learn from these important conversations. Our focus will be at least three different levels of training: (1) clinical conversations about race-matters, (2) EFT demonstrations with Black clients, and (3) exploring our own internal worlds associated with cultural identity. Our training team represents leaders in the BET African American community, and trainers in EFT diversity.
